Adventssingen Prohn

Advent Concert in a Medieval Village Church

The Adventssingen Prohn takes place in the Dorfkirche Prohn – a brick Gothic church building in the municipality of Prohn, located about five kilometers north of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund in the Vorpommern-Rügen district. The historic church, used by the Protestant parish of Prohn/Groß Mohrdorf, provides the atmospheric setting for the Advent concert.

The Choir pro(hn) musica

The sponsor of the Adventssingen is the Chor pro(hn) musica, the mixed choir of the Prohn community. Originating from the Prohner Volksliederchor founded in 1992, the ensemble has borne its current name since 2012. The choir sings in four parts – folk songs, gospel, and multilingual repertoire – and gives annual Advent, Christmas, and summer concerts in the Prohn church. For the Adventssingen, it is supplemented by other musicians.

Tradition on the First Advent

The Adventssingen is firmly scheduled for the first Advent Sunday, marking the musical start of the Prohn Advent season. With songs that prepare for Christmas, locals and guests gather in the village church. The concert is part of a dense Prohn Advent and Christmas program, which also includes the Living Advent Calendar, a Christmas concert, and the Christmas market.

Prohn During Advent

The municipality of Prohn borders the Prohner Wiek, a bay of the Strelasund, to the north. During Advent, the village church becomes the center of community life – the Adventssingen opens this contemplative phase of the year with choral singing in an atmospheric setting.
