Small Advent market around the village fountain in Bielefeld's Kirchdornberg district
While Bielefeld's large city center Christmas market mobilizes tens of thousands of visitors at Jahnplatz and Alter Markt, a small Advent market with a village character has established itself in the western district of Kirchdornberg, offering exactly what many are looking for: no hustle and bustle, no mass consumption, but district atmosphere, regional exhibitors, and fire barrels around a historic fountain. Since 2022, the Heimatverein Dornberg e.V., together with the Dorfkrug Kirchdornberg e.V., has been organizing the Advent market on the first weekend of December.
The Kirchplatz in Kirchdornberg is one of Bielefeld's most beautiful village squares — with the historic church, the old village fountain, cobblestone paths, and half-timbered facades that are festively decorated in Advent. The address designation "Am Tie" refers to the traditional Low German village center — the "Tie" was the common meeting and judicial center of every old village. In Kirchdornberg, this tradition is vividly revived.
The program focuses on atmospheric elements:
What distinguishes the market: The selection of exhibitors is small and curated, with a focus on regional brands from Bielefeld and the surrounding area:
Behind the Advent market is a classic volunteer-based organizational structure: The Heimatverein Dornberg e.V. is the district's traditional history, customs, and homeland preservation association, and the Dorfkrug Kirchdornberg e.V. is the eponymous event and community association centered around the historic "Dorfkrug" inn. The combination of both associations makes the market a district festival that reinvents Kirchdornberg's cultural identity each year.
Kirchdornberg is located in the west of Bielefeld, about 6 km from the city center. Until 1973, Dornberg was an independent municipality with the districts of Kirchdornberg, Hoberge-Uerentrup, Niederdornberg, Großdornberg, Schröttinghausen, among others. Today, Dornberg is a Bielefeld district that has carefully preserved its rural, village character — farms, fields, old churches, small commercial structures. Anyone wanting to experience a Bielefeld district with a village atmosphere should visit Dornberg / Kirchdornberg.
The 2026 edition continues the tradition that has grown since 2022: a deliberately small, curated Advent market as an alternative to the big city center hustle. The list of exhibitors and the exact time program will be communicated by the organizer in advance.
