Commemoration Week for the 400th Anniversary of the Blood Pentecost 1626 in Hann. Münden
The Blood Pentecost of 1626 is one of the most tragic events in the history of Hann. Münden and the entire region. During the Thirty Years' War, which ravaged Germany from 1618 to 1648, imperial troops under the command of Field Marshal Johann Tserclaes von Tilly attacked the town on Pentecost weekend in 1626. Despite surrender negotiations and assurances, a severe massacre occurred, which shaped the town for generations and is etched into the collective memory of Hann. Münden.
In 2026, this event will mark its 400th anniversary. The town of Hann. Münden has launched an extensive commemoration program that not only remembers the historical event but also places it in the context of general war history, the theme of peace, and today's social responsibility. The event week from May 18 to 25, 2026, includes Pentecost weekend and thus the anniversary of the event.
The documentary core of the commemoration program is a special exhibition in the Hagelturm, one of the significant historical towers of Hann. Münden's town fortifications. The exhibition presents historical sources, contemporary reports, graphics, and objects from the Thirty Years' War era, making the events of 1626 historically tangible.
Evening lectures by historians and peace researchers illuminate various aspects of the event and its aftermath. An organ concert featuring Baroque and contemporary music in one of Münden's churches provides the musical framework for the commemoration. The combination of historical and musical reflection opens up different approaches to the theme.
Thematic city tours lead visitors to the historical sites of the event and explain the topographical and architectural backgrounds. Historical walks and staged readings with texts from the period and literary reflections on war, violence, and memory complete the program. The staged readings combine documentary sources with aesthetic staging.
The commemoration week is designed as a multi-layered program that illuminates the historical event from various perspectives. The special exhibition in the Hagelturm provides the documentary basis, the lectures offer the scientific context, the organ concert sets the musical framework, the city tours provide the topographical approach, and the staged readings offer literary-aesthetic reflection. This diversity creates different opportunities to engage with the theme.
The program is intended not only as historical remembrance but also as a contribution to the current peace debate. The experiences of violence during the Thirty Years' War serve as a warning that is relevant to contemporary society. The commemoration week aims to connect both dimensions: mourning the victims of 1626 and taking responsibility for a peaceful future.
