Anniversary festival of the reconstruction of the famous Tanzlinde in Peesten, Franconia
The Tanzlinde Peesten is a unique sight in Germany: an 87 square meter wooden dance hall is built into the crown of an old linden tree – supported by twelve stone pillars, accessible via an 18th-century stone spiral staircase. This makes Peesten one of the few places in Franconia where the old tradition of dancing on the linden tree has remained alive. The landmark is located in Peesten, a lower district of the market town of Kasendorf in the Kulmbach district, state of Bavaria.
Over the centuries, the wooden superstructure had suffered damage; in 2001, the structure was painstakingly rebuilt according to the historical original by the Förderkreis Tanzlinde Peesten. This coincided with the 50th planting anniversary of the linden tree in whose crown the hall sits. Since then, the Tanzlinde has once again served as a venue for plays, concerts, and especially for the traditional Lindenkerwa (linden tree fair), which takes place every year in June.
For the 25th anniversary of the reconstruction, the Förderkreis, together with the market town of Kasendorf, is organizing a two-day festival program. On Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 8 PM, a special theater performance titled „Ka Weiber, Ka Gschrei" will start on the Tanzlinde stage – the performance has been sold out for weeks. On Sunday, May 24, 2026, the official anniversary festival will follow with a celebratory church service, speeches, traditional music, and demonstration events, as well as an open day at the Tanzlinde itself.
The Tanzlinde Peesten symbolically represents Franconian customs, which live on the linden tree rather than in a museum. For years, it has been the venue for theater groups, folk music evenings, and traditional celebrations. With the Lindenkerwa in June 2026, this tradition continues. As a tourist attraction, the Tanzlinde is an important excursion destination in the Fränkische Schweiz (Franconian Switzerland) and the Fränkische Schweiz - Frankenjura Nature Park.
On May 23 and 24, 2026, the Tanzlinde Peesten will celebrate its 25th reconstruction anniversary with a two-day program. The organizers are the Förderkreis Tanzlinde Peesten and the market town of Kasendorf.
The event kicks off on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 8 PM with the theater performance „Ka Weiber, Ka Gschrei" on the Tanzlinde stage – a traditional peasant play that utilizes the special atmosphere of the linden tree. The performance is already sold out.
On Sunday, May 24, 2026, the official anniversary festival will follow: celebratory church service, official ceremony, speeches, traditional music, refreshments by the Förderkreis, and an open day at the Tanzlinde. For festival visitors, free access to the dance hall via the historic spiral staircase is particularly attractive.
Theater performance on Saturday already sold out, no new tickets available. Anniversary ceremony on Sunday with free admission. Refreshments by the Förderkreis at club prices.
Peesten is located about 10 km northwest of Kulmbach. Reachable via the B 85. Parking available in the center of Peesten. From Kulmbach train station, take a regional bus towards Kasendorf.
