Anniversary of a Small Brigade in the Rhön

The festival weekend "150 Years of Reyersbach Fire Brigade" marks a significant anniversary for one of the many small local brigades in the Rhön-Grabfeld district (Bavaria). The Reyersbach Volunteer Fire Brigade was founded 150 years ago in what is now a district of the municipality of Bastheim and has since not only responded to countless calls but also significantly contributed to village community life.

Reyersbach and the Rhön

Reyersbach is one of the districts of the municipality of Bastheim, which, with its few hundred inhabitants, is among the smaller municipalities in the Rhön-Grabfeld district. The district is located in northern Bavaria on the border with Hesse and Thuringia and is part of the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve. Here, the Volunteer Fire Brigade is not only an emergency organization but also a pillar of village social life: Maypole raising, carnival parades, and round anniversaries are organized shoulder-to-shoulder with other associations.

Festival Weekend with Fire Brigade Camaraderie

As is customary for many 150th-anniversary fire brigade celebrations in Bavaria, the program is likely to follow a classic structure: Gala evening on Saturday with dance music in the festival tent, ceremonial act on Sunday with greetings from political and fire brigade dignitaries, a formal ceremony with the presentation of honors, and a parade of neighboring brigades through the village. All of this is embedded in a festival tent operation with Franconian catering.

Tradition of Fire Brigade Anniversaries

Such 150th-anniversary celebrations are an important date in Bavarian fire brigade culture. Volunteer fire brigades were founded in many villages in Lower Franconia around 1875, triggered by reforms of the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior after the Franco-Prussian War. Today, FF anniversaries are more than internal fire brigade events: they become village festivals that make the cohesion of an entire community visible.
