A Village Celebrates Its First 1080 Years
Atzendorf is located in the Salzlandkreis in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, a few kilometers south of Magdeburg and north of Staßfurt, to which the village now belongs. First documented mention in the year 946, the place looks back on 1080 years of documented history in 2026. For such an occasion, Atzendorf is pulling out all the stops: From May 15th to 24th, 2026, a ten-day celebration will take place, organized by a festival committee with the support of around 20 regional sponsors.
Festival Parade with Historical Agricultural Machinery
The highlight of the festival week is the festive parade on Sunday, May 17th. Unlike classic city festival parades, the focus here is on rural tradition: historical agricultural machinery, horse-drawn carriages, old threshing machines, and tractors will roll through the village, accompanied by clubs, marksmen, the fire brigade, and kindergarten groups. The Magdeburg Börde heritage — Atzendorf lies on the edge of Germany's most fertile agricultural landscape — is made visible here.
Concerts, District Music Meeting, Sports
Over the ten days, a packed program will take place. The district music meeting on May 21st in the church space brings together music associations from the Salzlandkreis. Concerts with youth brass bands, organ concerts, performances by regional bands, and a Retro Disco Night provide musical diversity. The sports department ZLG Atzendorf organizes volleyball and football tournaments.
Mid-week, there are open house days at farms and museum visits on the program — Atzendorf's agriculture opens its doors to visitors. For children, there are carousels, face painting, and hands-on activities. A festive church service in the village church marks the spiritual highlight of the week.
The Magdeburg Börde Celebrates Itself
Atzendorf is one of many villages in the Magdeburg Börde, one of Europe's most productive agricultural landscapes. The villages here are often centuries old — with first mentions in the 9th, 10th, or 11th centuries. A 1080-year celebration is therefore more than a local anniversary: It is a reminder of the centuries-long continuity of German village culture and the importance of agriculture in this region.
Community Festival, Supported by Clubs
Like most village anniversaries in Saxony-Anhalt, this festival week is supported by local clubs: Atzendorf Volunteer Fire Brigade, sports clubs, ZLG, youth groups, kindergartens, and citizens' initiatives work hand in hand. For young and old, for all generations — this is how the festival committee itself describes its ambition. Anyone living in the region or planning a weekend trip will experience a village festival here as it should be.
