Political street festival on Labour Day – stage, speeches, punk and hip-hop at the Mariannenplatz fire brigade fountain
For decades, Mariannenplatz in the Kreuzberg district (Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg borough) has been one of Berlin's most symbolic public spaces. It's home to the Bethanien building (occupied in 1969 after demolition plans, thus the birthplace of Berlin's squatter movement), the fire brigade fountain with its iconic fire-fighting monument, and was the endpoint for many a revolutionary May 1st demonstration in the 1980s. Anyone in Kreuzberg on May 1st will inevitably pass by Mariannenplatz.
In Berlin, especially in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg borough, May 1st is no ordinary public holiday. Since the late 1980s, the day has represented a distinct Berlin tradition of demonstrations, the MyFest street festival, open-air concerts, and political rallies. The Left Party's Mariannenplatzfest is part of this tradition, held at one of the day's central locations.
The stage programme begins at 12:00 PM and continues into the evening. The musical selection is deliberately diverse: punk and metal as a historical link to Kreuzberg's subculture, hip-hop as the dominant political youth language today, and electronic dance music and techno for the evening. Politicians and activists will speak between sets. In 2026, Elif Eralp (top candidate for The Left in the Berlin House of Representatives election) and Kerstin Wolter (state chairwoman) are announced – an additional election campaign focus in an election year.
Around the stage, trade unions (DGB, ver.di, IG Metall), anti-racist initiatives, and neighbourhood projects will present themselves. For children, there will be theatre performances and face painting – the festival is designed to be family-friendly, not purely a demonstration format. Food and drinks are sold at cost price, with volunteer helpers managing the stalls.
Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg is one of the youngest and most politically prominent boroughs in the state of Berlin. With the MyFest, the Revolutionary May 1st Demonstration, and the Mariannenplatzfest, the borough concentrates political and cultural events on a single day each year, a level rarely reached elsewhere in Germany. The Mariannenplatzfest is the consistently political pole of this day – not spectacular, but non-negotiable.
The 2026 edition, like every year, was marked by Kreuzberg's May 1st tradition. The political programme in 2026 was additionally shaped by the election campaign for the Berlin House of Representatives election – Elif Eralp appeared as the top candidate for The Left, and state chairwoman Kerstin Wolter emphasized the party's roots in the social movements of the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg borough.
Musically, the historical genres of Kreuzberg's subculture (punk, metal, hip-hop) dominated the day, complemented by electronic sets for the evening. Families found an accessible entry point to the politically charged day through children's theatre and face painting.
