Wyk on Föhr — Main town on the island

Wyk on Föhr is the only urban settlement on the island of Föhr in the district of North Frisia (Schleswig-Holstein). With around 4,500 inhabitants, Wyk is also the island's most important North Sea resort — a holiday destination for thousands of visitors every summer, with a harbour, promenade, sand embankment, beach, and town centre. The flat island, measuring approximately 12 km in length and 8 km in width, is ideal for outdoor sports: cycling, hiking, and running.

The town run since 1999

The Wyker Stadtlauf was launched in 1999 by Föhr Tourismus GmbH and has since become a permanent fixture in the island's summer sports calendar. A course through the town centre — past the harbour, through the pedestrian zone, along the sand embankment — forms the loop, which is completed twice in the main run and once in the fun run. The flat island course (essentially without any elevation changes) makes the town run a fast competition that allows for good personal bests.

Local sports event with island character

The town run is an example of how a small island community develops a sports event that radiates far beyond its regional significance. Runners from the North Frisian mainland, from the Halligen islands, and from Hamburg sports clubs travel for the event. The Föhr sports community (clubs like SC Föhr and MTV Wyk) manages course marshals, water stations, and timing. An event that shows that a high-quality town run is possible even on an island with just under 4,500 inhabitants.
