Colourful Carnival Parade through the City Centre with Floats, Music Bands, and Pre-Parade Entertainment at the World Exhibition Square
Although Hannover is not one of Germany's classic carnival strongholds, the capital of Lower Saxony has a dedicated carnival scene that has been active for decades. Several carnival clubs, united in Karneval in Hannover e.V., keep the tradition alive — with sessions, galas, guard performances, and the annual highlight: the carnival parade on Shrove Saturday. The "hannoveranische Helau!" replaces the Rhenish "Alaaf!", and the atmosphere is in no way inferior to the major role models in Cologne, Düsseldorf, or Mainz.
The pre-parade entertainment begins at 11:11 AM — the typical carnival time. Live bands, dance troupes, carnival princes, and their courts will heat up the crowd at the World Exhibition Square on Expo-Plaza. DJs will play carnival hits, and the mood will quickly rise. Those who arrive early will secure a good spot along the parade route.
Precisely at 1:11 PM, the procession will start moving from Culemannstraße / corner of Friedrichswall. Around 10 floats will parade through the city centre — decorated with themes from politics, society, and pop culture, loaded with 'Kamelle' (sweets) and small gifts that are thrown into the audience. 8 music and marching bands will provide the musical accompaniment with classic march music and carnival songs. Numerous walking groups — carnival societies, clubs, families in costumes, dance troupes — will line the procession.
Thousands of spectators in costumes — clowns, cowboys, princesses, caricatures of politicians, Pippi Longstocking, all kinds of fantasy — will line the parade route. "Helau!" calls will ring out, 'Kamelle' will fly, and confetti will rain down. Families with children have a good chance of collecting plenty, and the atmosphere is family-friendly and peaceful.
After the parade, several bars, clubhouses, and carnival halls will open their doors for after-parade parties. Those who wish to extend the day will find dancing, music, and carnival atmosphere until late into the night.
The Hannover carnival is small but passionate. The initiative Karneval in Hannover e.V. works on a voluntary basis, and all participants are wholeheartedly involved. Anyone who wants to experience Hannover from an unusual side for a day in February will be exactly right at the carnival parade.
The exact parade route will be published by Karneval in Hannover e.V. shortly before the date.
