Wilhelmshaven's largest city and harbour festival with 7 stages and 60+ bands
The Weekend on the Jade – 'WadJ' for short – is Wilhelmshaven's central summer event and a major occasion that resonates far beyond the region. The festival has been held annually at the beginning of July for almost half a century. The 49th edition in 2026 continues the tradition with an expanded programme combining maritime elements, music, culinary delights, and family activities. For four days, several hundred thousand visitors flock to the harbour city on the Jade Bay.
Musically, the festival covers an extraordinary range. Over 60 bands perform on seven stages spread across the city centre and harbour – rock and pop as well as hip-hop, blues, folk, shanty singing, and medieval music. Each stage has its own focus and regular audience. Well-known regional and national acts perform on the main stages at Bontekai and Großer Hafen, while smaller stages provide a platform for newcomers and local bands.
The maritime character is the festival's hallmark. Historic and modern ships are open for viewing at Bontekai, the German Armed Forces and Navy present units and equipment, and a pirate village offers live theatre and interactive activities. The KinderHafenFest provides a dedicated family programme with games, craft activities, and demonstrations. The arts and crafts market and a large funfair with rides and game stalls complete the offerings.
The highlight of the four-day festival is the grand finale fireworks display on Sunday evening around 11 PM, launched from the Großer Hafen. Thousands of visitors gather by the water to witness the spectacle. It is one of the most famous pyrotechnic displays on the North German North Sea coast and a fitting conclusion to an extraordinary weekend in Wilhelmshaven.
The 49th edition in 2026 is the penultimate one before the major anniversary in 2027. The festival has continuously evolved over the years and is now considered one of the most important summer festivals on the German North Sea coast. The 2026 programme, as always, is extremely broad.
The Weekend on the Jade is not only a cultural event but also a major economic occasion for Wilhelmshaven. Hotels, gastronomy, and retail benefit significantly. The city administration, Wilhelmshaven Touristik & Freizeit GmbH, and numerous associations form the organising team together.
The exact 2026 programme – stage schedules, band performances, ships, and special events – will be published in spring 2026 on the organiser's website. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
Free admission. Programme flyers and the organiser's app will help with orientation.
Wilhelmshaven is accessible via the A 29 (Wilhelmshaven exit) and federal roads B 210 and B 437. During the Weekend on the Jade, the city centre will be partially closed, with park-and-ride facilities and shuttle buses provided. The Wilhelmshaven Hauptbahnhof (main train station) is within walking distance of the festival grounds.
The festival extends over several square kilometres of the city centre and harbour. Sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended. Sanitary facilities, first-aid stations, and information points are clearly marked.
Numerous stalls offer regional and international specialities, draught beer, wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic beverages. Vegetarian and vegan options are available.
