40th edition of the Winegrowers' Festival in the lower town on Lake Constance with historic wine fountain
The Winzerfest der Meersburger Vereine is one of the most important civic festivals in the Lake Constance region and celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2026. Since 1987, on the first full weekend in July, the Unterstadtstraße — the narrow, picturesque lane between Lake Constance and Meersburg's upper town — transforms into a festival mile. The union of Meersburg winegrowers and local associations (sports clubs, music clubs, fire brigade, marksmen, kindergarten support association) host together: Wine from Lake Constance, regional specialties, live music in a summer evening setting.
The trademark of the festival is the historic wine fountain in the middle of the Unterstadtstraße. During the Winegrowers' Festival, wine actually flows from the fountain instead of water — a Southern German festival custom that has made the Meersburg Winegrowers' Festival particularly famous. The fountain is in operation throughout the entire festival weekend; visitors can bring small tasting cups or buy them on site. The tradition is known throughout Europe and is often advertised as a festival attraction.
On both festival days, several music groups play alternately on different stages in the Unterstadtstraße: Lake Constance traditional bands, cover bands, folk bands. The Meersburg associations serve around with:
Meersburg (around 5,700 inhabitants, Bodenseekreis, AGS 08435) is one of the most beautiful towns on Lake Constance. The old town is divided into two parts: The upper town with Meersburg Castle and Meersburg Palace (summer residence of the Prince-Bishops of Constance) sits enthroned on a hill above the lake; the lower town is located directly on the water with the harbor, the landing stage for Lake Constance shipping, and the historic Unterstadtstraße — the venue of the Winegrowers' Festival. Meersburg is home to one of the most renowned wineries in the region (Staatsweingut Meersburg, founded 1604 — one of the oldest state wineries in Germany).
The anniversary year — the 40th edition since 1987 — promises a particularly festive weekend. The Unterstadtstraße, as a narrow, picturesque festival mile between Lake Constance and the upper town hill, is the natural stage for this festival. Several music groups play alternately, the local associations serve Lake Constance specialties and wines, and the historic wine fountain spews wine throughout the weekend.
Based on experience, the festival attracts visitors from the Bodenseekreis, the nearby Vorarlberg (Austria), Swiss Thurgau, and especially tourists on Lake Constance. Arriving by Lake Constance shipping is highly recommended — the lower town gets very crowded on Sunday afternoon, and the ship landing stage is only 50 m from the festival.
Free admission to the festival mile. Wine, food, and drinks at association and winemaker prices. Bring tasting cups for the wine fountain or purchase them on site.
By Boat: Lake Constance shipping from Konstanz, Friedrichshafen, Lindau, and Bregenz — landing stage directly in the lower town.
By Train: Train to Friedrichshafen or Überlingen, then boat or bus.
By Car: B31 to Meersburg, parking lots on the outskirts (city center is traffic-calmed during the festival).
Free admission to the entire festival mile. Food and drinks at association prices.
Come by boat from Konstanz or Friedrichshafen — arriving by Lake Constance ferry offers a special impression of the lower town's festival backdrop. Stay overnight in the upper town's gastronomy (e.g., Schloss Meersburg Restaurant, Weinstube Meersburg) for a complete Lake Constance weekend tour.
