Three days of art, music, and fire shows in a Victorian atmosphere at Altena Castle
2026
About Winter Spectacle
Winter Spectacle — edition 2026
Three Days of Castle Art at Altena Castle
Not a classic Christmas market — but a staged art production. Walk-acts, storytellers, live musicians, and fire artists will animate the historic rooms and the castle courtyard under the banner of Victorian aesthetics. The castle will be staged with a gaslight atmosphere, fairy lights, and a mystical mood.
Fire Show as Evening Highlight
Every festival day from dusk onwards, a fire show in the castle courtyard: fire eaters and pyro artists will transform the castle into a stage of flaming imagery. The highlight of every evening.

Not a Christmas Market — but an Art Production
The Winter Spectacle Altena Castle explicitly positions itself not as a Christmas market, but as a curated art production. While other castles set up classic stalls with mulled wine and bratwurst during Advent, Altena focuses on artist performances: walk-acts, storytellers, fire artists, and live musicians will animate the historic rooms and the castle courtyard over three days. The result is an atmospheric blend of medieval castle scenery and Victorian aesthetics—a concept that is rare in the German castle scene in December.
Victorian Atmosphere
The Victorian aesthetic is consistently maintained in the costumes of the performers, the music selection, the decorations, and the lighting design—castle romance meets 19th-century England with a gaslight atmosphere, black-and-white elegance, and mystical narratives. This stylistic clarity distinguishes the spectacle from classic medieval castle events.
Three Festival Days, Different Each Day
The castle will be activated for three days: Friday, November 27, 2026, 5 PM–10 PM (Opening and Premiere Evening), Saturday, November 28, 11 AM–10 PM (Main Visitor Day with Full Program), Sunday, November 29, 11 AM–6 PM (Family Day with Festival Finale). The fire show every evening is the highlight—fire eaters and pyro artists will stage the castle courtyard in flaming imagery.
Admission €4 — The Deliberate Price
With an admission fee of only €4 (reduced €2), the Winter Spectacle is deliberately kept affordable—an investment by the Märkischer Kreis in Altena as a cultural location. The admission is not a marketing trick, but part of the concept: the castle is intended to be a meeting place for families from the Sauerland region, not an exclusive high-priced event.
Altena Castle — Cradle of the Modern Youth Hostel
Altena Castle is one of the most important hilltop castles in the Sauerland region and is considered the cradle of the modern youth hostel—the world's first permanent youth hostel was established here in 1914. The castle is located on a mountain spur above the town of Altena and is now a museum with a castle chapel, medieval kitchen, living quarters, and the historic youth hostel in its original condition. In winter, it is the ideal venue for an atmospherically dense event like the Spectacle.
Altena in the Märkischer Sauerland
Altena is a town in the Märkischer Kreis in the Sauerland region with around 17,000 inhabitants, situated in the narrow Lenne valley. The town is known as a wire industry location and is regionally shaped by the castle as a tourist destination. The Winter Spectacle extends the castle season into late autumn and positions Altena as a cultural destination in the Sauerland region.
