Award-winning Wine Festival – Wine Hike from the foot of the Wißberg across the Johannispfad plateau with viewpoints over Rheinhessen
At 271 meters, the Wißberg is one of the most distinctive elevations in western Rheinhessen. From the plateau, you can overlook large parts of the region: the rolling hills of Wonnegau, the Hunsrück to the north, the Donnersberg to the west, and on clear days, even the Odenwald beyond the Rhine. Its location has made the Wißberg a cherished excursion destination and a scenic highlight of Rheinhessen for centuries.
The festival's format is unique: instead of a classic festival tent or a promenade, wine stations along the historic Johannispfad form the festival concept. The path leads from the foot of the Wißberg in a gentle incline over old farm tracks to the plateau. Every few hundred meters, there are wine stations with winemakers from Gau-Bickelheim serving their own wines. Upon reaching the plateau, hikers will find further wine offerings and culinary delights provided by the Landfrauen.
The 'Ausgezeichnet Weinfest' seal is awarded by Rheinhessenwein e.V. and identifies wine festivals that meet strict quality criteria: quality of the wines served (predominantly Qualitätsweine and Prädikatsweine), competence of the servers, atmospheric integration into the wine landscape, culinary accompaniment, and hospitality. Only a few Rheinhessen wine festivals bear this seal – Wein erleben im Wißberg is among the pioneers.
Gau-Bickelheim invites you to a spring event on March 26, 2026, which marks the start of the wine season. Wein erleben im Wißberg in July is the annual highlight of the festival season in the village. Those who wish to explore the region more intensively can also visit the Wißberg outside of the festival day and explore the vineyards on the marked Wißberg circular hiking trail.
Gau-Bickelheim is located in the Verbandsgemeinde Wöllstein in western Rheinhessen, about 15 km west of Bad Kreuznach. The village is surrounded by vineyards and is among the quality-conscious wine villages in the region. The wines served are predominantly dry Riesling, Silvaner, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder, and Rosé – a good spectrum of modern Rheinhessen wine philosophy.
