Oldest sailing regatta on the German North Sea coast with traditional ships
Since its first edition, the Wilhelmshaven Sailing-Cup has established itself as the most important sailing regatta on the German North Sea coast. What began as a smaller local event is now an international date in the calendar for historic and traditional sailing ships. The Großer Hafen Wilhelmshaven provides the ideal backdrop: wide expanses of water, impressive harbour architecture, and close proximity to the city centre make the regatta attractive for both skippers and the public.
A special feature of the Sailing-Cup is “Boarding Next Generation”. In its 19th edition in 2026, pupils and trainees from all over Lower Saxony will have the opportunity to sail on traditional sailing ships for five hours — as crew, not as passengers. The project imparts maritime knowledge, teamwork, and enthusiasm for sailing, bringing hundreds of young people onto a historic sailing ship for the first time each year. It kicks off on Friday, October 2nd, 2026.
The main regatta takes place on Saturday, October 3rd. Traditional sailing ships — schooners, brigs, cutter gaffers — will compete for top positions off Wilhelmshaven. On Sunday, all ships will be open for free viewings. The supporting programme includes live music on the harbour stage, a festive entry parade, harbour tours for the public, and a harbour market with maritime arts and crafts, gastronomy, and souvenirs. Admission to the festival grounds is free. The 10th International Shanty Choir Festival will take place concurrently at Bontekai.
The 24th edition continues the ongoing tradition of the Wilhelmshaven sailing regatta. The programme is deliberately broad — competition, education, and a folk festival all in one.
On Sunday, October 4th, the 10th International Shanty Choir Festival will take place at Bontekai, running parallel to the conclusion of the Sailing-Cup. Those who combine both will experience an extraordinary maritime day.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Harbour tours are subject to a fee.
The Großer Hafen is centrally located in Wilhelmshaven, within walking distance of the main train station. Arrive via the A 29 motorway. Parking facilities are signposted in the harbour area.
The festival grounds extend along the Großer Hafen. Sturdy footwear and weather-proof clothing are recommended. Sanitary facilities and first-aid stations are available.
On Sunday, October 4th, all participating ships will be accessible to the public. Harbour tours are subject to a fee, with limited spaces.
