Three summer live music evenings in the Hebbel town
Wesselburen, with around 3,300 inhabitants in the Dithmarschen district of Schleswig-Holstein, is known as the Hebbel town — the playwright Friedrich Hebbel, one of the most important German stage authors of the 19th century, was born here in 1813. The Hebbel Museum in the town centre and St. Bartholomew's Church characterise the historic centre. In summer, the market square in front of the church becomes an open-air stage for three free summer evenings, organised by the town of Wesselburen.
The concept is simple and effective: on three Thursday evenings in midsummer — every two weeks in July and August — live bands set up on the market square. Free admission, starting at 6:00 PM, food and drinks from local stalls. The musical spectrum ranges from country and folk to rock cover bands and maritime live music. The main thing is: it must be danceable and suitable for the multi-generational audience.
What makes the summer evenings special is the location: the market square is framed by St. Bartholomew's Church, a late Gothic brick building from the 14th century, and the historic facades of the town centre. When the evening sun falls over the church and the sound of a live band wafts across the square, a mood is created that is typical of the village and small-town culture of Dithmarschen.
For 2026, the town has come up with something new: the third and final summer evening on August 13th will take place for the first time in the garden of the Hebbel Museum — a direct connection between the town's literary heritage and its vibrant summer culture. In the state of Schleswig-Holstein, Dithmarschen district, the summer evenings are among the regular summer events where the Hebbel town shows that tradition and contemporary festival culture can strengthen each other.
The 2026 season brings a new feature: the third summer evening will move to the garden of the Hebbel Museum. This will be the first time the town directly connects the literary heritage of Friedrich Hebbel with its summer festival culture. The first two dates will remain on the market square under St. Bartholomew's Church.
The current band selection will be published on wesselburen.de.
