Annual Schützenfest of the Vogelgilde Schülp in the Krogmann Barn
The Vogelgilden (bird shooting clubs) are among the oldest associations in Northern Germany — many were founded as early as the 17th or 18th century to unite village communities through communal bird shooting. This tradition is particularly vibrant in Dithmarschen: almost every municipality has its own guild, which holds a firm place in the annual festival calendar.
The core of the festival is the bird shooting: a wooden eagle — the «Vogel» — is attached to a mast. Guild members take turns shooting at the bird with a rifle or crossbow, aiming to bring it down piece by piece. Whoever shoots the last piece — usually the body — becomes King or Queen of the year. The proclamation takes place ceremoniously in the festival hall; the honorary king or queen wears a sash for a year and represents the guild at all festivals in the region.
The Krogmann Barn at Schülper Chaussee 20 has been the venue for the Schülp Gildefest for years. The old thatched barn is decorated for the festival, a stage is set up, and standing tables and benches are arranged. The King's proclamation, communal meal, and evening dance take place here.
Schülp is a small municipality in western Dithmarschen, in the Amt Mitteldithmarschen. With fewer than 1,000 inhabitants, Schülp is one of those villages where the Schützenfest, harvest festival (Erntedankfest), and Christmas market structure the entire year — and social cohesion is carried across generations. Those who participate in the Gildefest experience a piece of North German village culture in its purest form.
The exact daily schedule follows the pattern developed over generations: morning assembly and bird shooting, midday festive procession through the village, afternoon proclamation, evening banquet and dance. During the festival day, Schülp is focused on the Gildefest — anyone driving through the village that day will see the festively decorated houses and the guild members in their traditional attire.
