Summer wine hike through the Langenlonsheim vineyards with Straußwirtschaft (wine tavern) stops
The wine hike "Straußi läuft" in Langenlonsheim combines enjoyable hiking with the traditional Nahe region's Straußwirtschaft. On two dates – early June and late July – Langenlonsheim's vintners open stations along a hiking route through their vineyards, serving young wines, Schoppen (large wine glasses), Federweißer (new wine), and small dishes.
The term "Straußwirtschaft" or "Straußi" dates back to an edict by Charlemagne, which allowed vintners to serve their own wines for a limited time without a restaurant license. Today, this tradition lives on as a cozy farm tavern and is part of the cultural heritage of German wine regions. During the wine hike, it literally becomes a "run" – the Straußwirtschafts come to the guests.
With around 4,000 inhabitants, Langenlonsheim is one of the larger wine-growing communities on the Nahe river, located in the Bad Kreuznach district shortly before the river flows into the Rhine. With over 350 hectares of vineyards, the village is one of the most important wine-growing locations in the region. Over 25 wineries manage the vineyards Steinchen, Bergborn, Königsschild, and Lauerweg. Viticulture shapes the village's appearance, economy, and festival culture.
The hike starts from 3 p.m. in the village center or at the market square. The route leads through the vineyards above the village, passing several Straußwirtschaft stations set up by the participating wineries. At each station, you can enjoy wine by the glass, Schorle (wine mixed with water), non-alcoholic drinks, and small dishes such as Flammkuchen (flatbread pizza), Spundekäs (cheese dip), Winzervesper (vintner's snack), or Bratwurst (grilled sausage). The distance is family-friendly and easy to manage, with a convivial and inviting atmosphere.
Both established family wineries and young vintners, who are shaping the next generation with modern wine styles and organic farming, participate in the wine hike. This makes the event an ideal opportunity to get to know the full stylistic range of Langenlonsheim's viticulture – from classic dry Riesling to modern natural wine.
The wine hike "Straußi läuft" will take place in 2026 on two summer dates: Saturday, June 6, and Saturday, July 25. This allows visitors to experience Langenlonsheim both during the time of the first white wine Schoppen from the new barrel and at the beginning of the summer holidays.
