Bi-monthly after-work wine evenings in Rheinstraße Mainz
Mainz is the state capital of Rheinhessen, Germany's largest wine-growing region with over 27,000 hectares of vineyards. For centuries, the city has seen itself as the gateway to Rheinhessen's wine culture and is home to numerous wine associations, wine merchants, and wine bars (Vinotheken). The Weinsalon Rheinhessen at Rheinstraße 68, right in the center of Mainz with views of the Rhine and the Theodor-Heuss Bridge, is one of the most prominent addresses in this scene: a wine bar with a curated selection, professional wine advice, and an ambitious event program.
The Weinsalon's After-Work Parties cater to the need of many Mainz employees to consciously transition from the workday to the evening. From 5 p.m. – just in time for the usual end of work – the Weinsalon opens its doors for an open format: no admission fee, no fixed seating, tastings by the glass, mingling at standing tables or on the steps in front of the salon. The atmosphere is casual, inviting, far from the formal setting of a wine tasting – and precisely for this reason, the format has developed a loyal regular clientele.
The concept combines three elements. Six to eight Rheinhessen winemakers per event present their wines, are present themselves, and explain the origin, grape varieties, and production methods. The selection varies between dates, offering a cross-section of the diversity of the Rheinhessen wine scene – from traditional Riesling and Silvaner specialists to the younger generation of winemakers with their new styles, as well as organic and natural wine producers. A changing menu from the Weinsalon with its own seasonal recommendations complements the offer. Live music, DJ sets, or acoustic concerts provide the accompaniment. Regional snacks – Spundekäs, Handkäs, Rieslingschmalz, salami, and bread from Mainz bakeries – complete the culinary offerings.
With their bi-monthly rhythm over six summer months, the After-Work Parties are a reliable meeting point for Mainz's wine and after-work scene. Those who want to experience Mainz as a wine city, beyond the major wine markets and festivals, will find a relaxed, knowledgeable atmosphere here where encounters, advice, and taste all have their place.
The program flow of a typical After-Work Party follows a proven logic. Doors open at 5 p.m., the winemakers' stands and the wine list are presented. During the first few hours, many guests take the opportunity to taste, move from stand to stand, talk to the winemakers, and compare the wines. The music starts subtly as atmospheric background. As the evening progresses, the salon fills up, the pace becomes livelier, and live bands or DJ sets take over the musical side. The evening ends openly – many guests stay well past 9 p.m., while others move on to Mainz's city center.
