Whitsun Wine Festival in the Heart of the Historic Old Town of Ahrweiler
The Weinmarkt der Ahr is one of the oldest and most atmospheric wine festivals in the Ahr Valley. For three days, the historic market square of Ahrweiler is transformed into an open stage for the approximately two dozen wineries and cooperatives of the region. Within the perfectly preserved city walls with their four gates, a unique ambiance is created where medieval architecture, regional gastronomy, and excellent wine merge into one.
The Ahr is considered one of the northernmost and, at the same time, one of the richest red wine-growing regions in Europe. Spätburgunder of international renown ripen on the steep slate terraces along the Ahr, alongside Frühburgunder, Portugieser, Riesling, and the finest sparkling wines produced by bottle fermentation. At the Weinmarkt der Ahr, the winegrower cooperatives and family businesses present their current vintages and offer opportunities for discussions with the producers. Between the stalls, you'll find culinary stations with Flammkuchen, Winzervesper (vintner's snacks), Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), and sweet specialties.
The emotional centerpiece of the festival is the coronation of the new Ahr Wine Royalty on Friday evening. The enthronement of the Ahr Wine Queen and her princesses against the historic backdrop of the town hall is traditionally accompanied by musical performances, a short festive speech, and a celebratory sparkling wine reception. Afterwards, local bands play on the main stage, and the festival continues into the evening hours.
The wine market traditionally falls on the extended Whitsun weekend and marks the convivial start of the Ahr wine festival season. During the day, families and hikers stroll through the stalls; in the evening, the market square fills with connoisseurs from Cologne, Bonn, and the entire Rhineland. Those who wish to stay the whole weekend can combine the event with a hike on the nearby Rotweinwanderweg (Red Wine Hiking Trail) or a visit to the Marienthal Abbey ruins.
The focus will be on the stalls of the Ahr vintners with their current vintages, complemented by a stage program of cover bands, jazz ensembles, and acoustic sets. Throughout all four days, gastronomic stands will offer regional specialties such as Reibekuchen, Flammkuchen, and Winzervesper.
On Friday evening, the new Ahr Wine Queen and her princesses will be enthroned on the main stage. The festival weekend will then continue with dance evenings and a Whitsun morning pint session on Sunday.
The exact stage and band program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure will follow the proven key points of previous years.
