Untermosel Wine Festival with Wine Majesties and Music at Schloss von der Leyen
Kobern-Gondorf is a twin village on the Untermosel with a special historical substance. While Kobern is known for its medieval market square, Niederburg castle, and the world-famous St. Matthias Chapel, Gondorf is the second district, boasting its own architectural jewel in Schloss von der Leyen. The castle, built in the 16th/17th century by the noble von der Leyen family, is one of the most significant Renaissance castles on the Middle Rhine and stands directly on the right bank of the Moselle.
The Weinkirmes Gondorf takes place every year on the 2nd weekend of September on the castle grounds and uses the spectacular setting for a special kind of wine event. In 2026, the festival runs on September 12 and 13 (Saturday and Sunday). The organizer is the local municipality of Kobern-Gondorf, which supports the festival together with local vintners and associations.
The motto “Wine, Majesties, and Music” summarizes the three pillars of the festival. The Moselle wines from Gondorf and Untermosel vintners are the focus – Riesling from slate soils, Pinot Noir, Müller-Thurgau, and Elbling are served at stalls. The wine majesties – the Wine Queen and her attendants – are an essential part of the festival and appear at receptions, coronations, and ceremonies. Live music accompanies the festival with regional bands and popular music.
The backdrop of Schloss von der Leyen gives the Weinkirmes a special character that distinguishes it from other Untermosel festivals. The Renaissance castle with its distinctive half-timbered facade and surrounding gardens forms an architectural framework that adds a historical dimension to the festival atmosphere.
Those who wish to combine their visit with an exploration of Kobern should plan the ascent to the St. Matthias Chapel (Oberburg) – a Romanesque building from the 13th century, which is one of the most important architectural monuments in the Rhineland.
