A Young Christmas Market with a Maritime Identity

The Weihnachtszauber am Hafen Barßel is a young Christmas market, launched in 2024 as a premiere to add a special touch to the Advent calendar in the municipality of Barßel. The event is organised by the municipality of Barßel in cooperation with the Barßel-Saterland Tourist Information. The concept deliberately focuses on the maritime identity of the location: the venue is the boat harbour on the Barßeler Tief — the same place where the big harbour festival is celebrated in summer.

Maritime Advent Atmosphere

Unlike the classic market square Christmas markets with their city centre backdrops, the Weihnachtszauber am Hafen plays with the special atmosphere of the harbour town: moored boats, glittering lights on the water, and festive lighting of the harbour facilities. This setting gives the market a unique character and makes it an experience that goes beyond the classic mulled wine visit.

Programme and Offerings

The focus is on classic Christmas market fare — mulled wine, Feuerzangenbowle (mulled rum punch), bratwurst, potato pancakes, gingerbread, candied almonds — stalls with arts and crafts and Advent decorations, as well as live music with Christmas carols. Families will find children's activities and illuminated harbour tours.
