Advent run between Apen and Augustfehn with a Santa hat for every participant
Over the years, the Weihnachtsmützenlauf Apen has become a firm fixture in the North German running calendar. What began as a small club idea now draws around 1,300 active participants to Apen and Augustfehn on the 3rd Sunday of Advent. The appeal: it's not about the fastest time, but about the shared experience in an Advent atmosphere. Every registered participant runs through the finish line wearing a red Santa hat and takes it home as a souvenir.
The organizers have deliberately designed the program to be family-friendly. The 600 m toddler distance opens the event to preschoolers, while the 1.8 km course is suitable for school-aged children. Ambitious runners can choose between the main courses of 5.1 km and 10.6 km, which lead through the rural Ammerland cultural landscape. Club teams, corporate teams, and families start side-by-side – a conscious statement against performance pressure.
A pre-Christmas atmosphere with mulled wine, hot drinks, and refreshments for children awaits participants in the finish area. Volunteer teams from TuS Augustfehn, TuS Vorwärts Augustfehn, and TV Apen coordinate the course, timing, and catering. Together with the municipality of Apen, the three clubs form a well-coordinated organization team that has been organizing the event voluntarily for years.
Registration is via the official website wmla.de with its own detailed announcement. Early birds benefit from reduced entry fees; on-site registration is possible after availability. Parking is ample in Apen and Augustfehn.
The 2026 announcement will likely be available on the official website wmla.de in late autumn 2026. Based on previous years, the main run wave starts in the late morning, preceded by the children's competitions. Registrations usually close a few days before the run; on-site registrations are possible depending on capacity.
The run is considered the perfect season finale for hobby athletes and an atmospheric family event. A festival atmosphere prevails in Apen and Augustfehn on race day, with refreshment stands along the course.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in autumn 2026. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
Detailed times, course maps, and course marshals will be communicated via wmla.de and the municipality of Apen.
