Bad Godesberg and the Mehlem District

Mehlem is one of the southernmost districts of Bonn and belongs to the Bad Godesberg city district. Located directly on the Rhine, between Bad Godesberg and Königswinter, the formerly independent village has retained its village character and its own centre around the market square on Mainzer and Siegfriedstraße. With around 8,000 inhabitants, Mehlem is one of Bonn's most charming and quiet neighbourhoods — and has been the venue for a small but lovingly organised neighbourhood Christmas market for years.

Neighbourhood Market with Character

The Mehlem Christmas Market is not the big Bonn Christmas Market in front of the Minster, but deliberately a neighbourhood festival. It is organised by the Mehlem local committee — a volunteer-run association of local clubs and engaged citizens. The stalls are set up around Mehlem Market Square, at the intersection of Mainzer Straße / Siegfriedstraße right in the village centre. Instead of large carousels, there is a mulled wine stand, bratwurst grill, potato pancakes, punch, handicrafts from local vendors, and usually live music by local choirs and brass bands.

One Day, One Weekend

Unlike the multi-week city centre markets, the Mehlem Christmas Market is a one-day event (or a maximum of one weekend). In 2026, November 28 was officially confirmed as the event date by the City of Bonn — this fits the traditional opening weekend of Bonn's pre-Christmas season, just before the 1st of Advent (November 29, 2026). Its compact format makes the market a reliable meeting point for the residents of Mehlem — those living in the district come here to meet their neighbours and club friends.

Integrated into Bonn's Pre-Christmas Programme

The Mehlem Christmas Market is part of the extensive event directory that the four Bonn district councils — Bonn, Bad Godesberg, Beuel, and Hardtberg — decide on annually. For Bad Godesberg, besides Mehlem, other neighbourhood markets (Plittersdorf, Friesdorf, Muffendorf, etc.) are part of the programme, as well as the central Bad Godesberg Christmas Market on Theaterplatz.

Getting to Mehlem

Take the Stadtbahn line 16 (Cologne-Bonn-Bad Godesberg-Königswinter) to the Mehlem stop; by car via the B 9 along the Rhine. Parking in the residential area — the market square itself is closed during the market. Around 25 minutes from Bonn Central Station by Stadtbahn line 16. In good weather, arriving by bicycle via the Rhine cycle path is recommended.
