Large Christmas market in Leer's historic old town with over five weeks of programming
Leer, with its old harbour, the Waage (weighing house), the Lutherkirche (Luther Church), and its 17th and 18th-century burgher houses, offers a particularly photogenic backdrop for a Christmas market. During the Advent season, the historic squares and alleys become the stage for one of the region's largest events for over five weeks. Thousands of lights, fir branches, and illuminated stalls bathe the old town in a warm atmosphere from late afternoon onwards.
The stalls offer arts and crafts, regional specialities, gift items, and seasonal decorations. The gastronomic offerings range from classic mulled wine (Glühwein) to Friesengeist, East Frisian punch, and eggnog, as well as crêpes, bratwurst, potato pancakes (Reibekuchen), smoked fish, and winter specialities. Families will find carousels, a Christmas pyramid, and rides for the younger guests.
Concerts by regional choirs, music associations, and brass bands alternate with Christmas readings, activities for children, and appearances by Father Christmas. Window dressing competitions and hands-on activities organised by the shops complement the programme. Sundays with open shops during Advent connect the market with Leer's retail trade.
The maritime connection of the market is characteristic of Leer. The historic harbour and the Schipperklottje (a small, traditional sailing ship) make a walk along the water an integral part of the market visit. Leer is easily accessible via the Emden-Münster railway line; several multi-storey car parks are within walking distance of the city centre.
The 2026 edition continues the long tradition of the large Leer Christmas market. The market's focal points are around the Town Hall, the Waage, and the maritime areas at the Harbour Head. Characteristic features include the lovingly designed lighting of the old town, the wide range of gastronomic options, and the connection with Leer's retail trade.
Families will find carousels and smaller rides, while adults can enjoy mulled wine stands in a historic setting and concerts by regional associations. Touristik Leer will publish detailed programme points for special events and Sundays with open shops in the autumn.
The exact programme for 2026 will be published by the organiser in the autumn. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
Detailed programme points and the list of participating associations and shops will be published by Touristik Leer.
