Traditional Fishermen's Festival on the Elbe Dike with Smoked Trout at Hof Sander
Hoopte is a district of Winsen on the right bank of the Elbe and looks back on a long history of Elbe fishing. For generations, families in Hoopte lived from fishing in the Elbe, and the tradition is deeply rooted in the village's history. The annual fishermen's festival commemorates this history and makes it tangible for today's generation.
Hof Sander on the Elbe dike is the festival grounds for the Hoopter Fischerfest. Its direct location on the dike provides the festival with its unmistakable backdrop: wide meadows, the view of the Elbe, and the harbor life in the background create an atmosphere that distinguishes it from any other folk festival in the region. The farm itself offers rooms for catering and workshops for the fishing demonstrations.
The traditional fishing demonstrations are at the heart of the festival. Experienced locals from Hoopte show how fish were caught in the Elbe with nets and traps in the past, demonstrate fish smoking in the smokehouse, and explain how the catch was processed. These demonstrations are not just a spectacle but preserve concrete craft knowledge that would be lost without this annual event.
The culinary highlight of the festival is the freshly smoked trout. It is prepared on-site and offered in several ways. In addition, there are fried fish, fish sandwiches, fish soup, and other maritime specialties. For those who don't prefer fish, there are grilled sausages, fries, and sweet treats available. With its snack offerings, the festival combines regional food culture with the classic folk festival character.
The Hoopte Volunteer Fire Brigade organizes the festival and uses the proceeds for club purposes. Thus, the festival is also an act of solidarity with volunteer work: those who eat and drink here directly support fire protection and the youth work of the Hoopte fire brigade. This combination of conviviality and club support makes the festival a community-building event.
The 2026 edition continues the tradition on the first Sunday in November. With Hof Sander as the festival grounds and the Elbe as the backdrop, an atmosphere is created that distinguishes the festival from other folk festivals in the region.
The freshly smoked trout remains the culinary highlight. The smokehouse at Hof Sander has been in operation for decades and continuously provides fresh smoked fish during the festival.
