Atmospheric village Christmas market on the 1st Advent – every two years
The Heimatbund Calberlah preserves the local history, customs, and festival culture of the village. With the Christmas market on the 1st Advent, it is responsible for one of the most socially important events of the year in Calberlah. The event is prepared on a voluntary basis, supported by a broad circle of helpers, local clubs, businesses, and the church community.
Unlike most Christmas markets, the Calberlah market only takes place every two years. This has given the market a special status: it is not everyday, not a matter of course, but an anticipated event that builds anticipation over two years. The density of the program and the commitment of the helpers benefit from this break between editions.
Wooden huts and stalls are set up on Mittelstraße. Mulled wine, children's punch, bratwurst, potato pancakes, gingerbread, cookies, almonds, and Schmalzkuchen are part of the gastronomic offerings. Sales stands with handicrafts, Christmas decorations, honey, and small gift ideas complete the offer.
A stage program with the church community's brass band, local choirs, the youth fire brigade, and demonstrations from club life provides variety at the market. For children, there are craft activities, occasional visits from St. Nicholas or Santa Claus with small gifts and sweets.
With the Alte Kapelle (Old Chapel), the Heimatbund, and an active village community, Calberlah has a pronounced festival culture. In the same year, 2026, the 450th anniversary of the Alte Kapelle Calberlah will also be celebrated – an indication of the cultural vibrancy of the place.
On the 1st Advent, Mittelstraße in Calberlah is transformed into a small, lovingly designed Christmas market. The Heimatbund Calberlah and its volunteers set up the wooden huts and stalls in the morning, so the market can open from 11 AM.
The program combines proven elements of a North German village Christmas market: mulled wine, bratwurst, potato pancakes, gingerbread, and almonds from the catering, handicrafts and gift ideas at the sales stands, plus a stage program with the church community's brass band, with local choirs and clubs. For children, there are craft activities, occasional visits from St. Nicholas, and small gifts.
