Berlin's central Advent market under the TV Tower with Europe's largest Ore Mountains Christmas pyramid
Anyone visiting Berlin in Advent cannot miss Alexanderplatz: the Christmas market under the TV Tower is one of the capital's most visited Advent markets. In contrast to the nostalgic-historic markets at Gendarmenmarkt or Charlottenburg Palace, the Alex market focuses on a mix of traditional market, funfair, and family amusement park. Antique carousels, a Ferris wheel, a roller skating rink, and an ice rink make it one of Berlin's largest and most action-packed Advent markets.
The visual landmark of the market is the approximately 20-meter-high Christmas pyramid from the Ore Mountains — according to the organizer, the largest of its kind in Europe and illuminated by more than 5000 lights. Mulled wine and Thuringian bratwurst are served on the ground floor of the pyramid; a café-restaurant with a glass front and a view of the Alex is located on the upper floors. On weekends, a tower brass band plays under the rotating figures of the pyramid.
Alexanderplatz has been one of Berlin's central meeting points since the 19th century. With the construction of the TV Tower (1969) and the redesign of the square, it became the inner-city hub. The Christmas market consistently utilizes this location: central, well-connected, surrounded by many hotels and subway/urban rail connections. The market also remains open in the days between Christmas and New Year — one of the few Berlin Advent markets that have maintained this tradition.
As every year, a dense row of stalls offering mulled wine, Thuringian bratwurst, roasted almonds, hats, hand-blown glass vases, and Christmas gifts surrounds the approximately 20-meter-high Ore Mountains Christmas pyramid. Carousels, a Ferris wheel, a roller skating rink, an ice rink, and the pyramid café on the top floor complete the program.
