Advent Magic in the Münsterland Forest
If you're looking for a unique Christmas market experience this Advent, the Waldweihnachtsmarkt at Landgut Krumme in Velen (Borken district, Münsterland, North Rhine-Westphalia) is one of the highlights of northwestern Germany. The market takes place at Landgut Krumme in Nordvelen – a traditional agricultural estate that has specialized in large themed events over the years. The grounds open their gates daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on four Advent weekends.
One Million Lights
The defining feature is the light installation: one million lights are spread throughout the forest – on trees, along paths, in themed islands, and on sculptures. LED chains, light projections, illuminated tunnels, and illuminated moats form a continuous light landscape through which guests can stroll along a roughly 1.5 km circular path. This is what clearly sets the forest Christmas market apart from classic city center markets – an immersive outdoor experience that is more reminiscent of a light park.
150 Exhibitors in Wooden Huts
Around 150 exhibitors present their offerings in stylish wooden huts: handmade arts and crafts from the Münsterland and neighboring Netherlands, knitted hats and scarves, wood carvings, candles, Advent decorations, and unique gift ideas. Culinary delights include all the classic Christmas market favorites: mulled wine in various variations (red, white, Feuerzangenbowle, eggnog), potato pancakes with apple sauce, bratwurst, mushrooms, crêpes, candied almonds, chocolate-covered fruits, and stick bread.
Horse-Drawn Carriages and Family Program
A special attraction for families is the horse-drawn carriage ride through the illuminated forest sections. In addition, there's a carousel, a Santa Claus meeting point, and a children's program with stories, craft activities, and musical performances. Several indoor areas offer shelter from rain or snow, with seating to warm up by open fireplaces.
The Four Advent Weekends
The market is spread over four Advent weekends in 2026: November 27-29, December 4-6, December 11-13, and December 18-20. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The advantage of this distribution is that those who miss one weekend can come to the next; at the same time, the market remains relevant for three weekends.
Velen in the Münsterland
Velen is located in western Münsterland, close to the Dutch border. The municipality is known for Velen Castle and the Burgtheater in the historic town center. Landgut Krumme is situated in the Nordvelen farming community – accessible by car via the B70, or by bus from Borken or Dorsten train stations. Due to its popularity, advance booking is recommended for bus tour groups.
