44th Volkslauf with 10 km main run around the Veste Coburg, HUK Championships and children's runs
The VR-Bank-Lauf Rund um die Veste Coburg will take place for the 44th time in 2026 — a remarkable tradition that makes it one of the oldest Volksläufe in the Franconian region. The event is organized by TV 1848 Coburg, founded in the revolutionary year 1848 and one of the oldest gymnastics clubs in Bavaria. The main sponsor is VR-Bank Coburg, with other partners including the HUK-Coburg insurance group and numerous regional supporters.
The Veste Coburg — one of the largest and best-preserved castle complexes in Germany dating back to the 11th century — forms the striking landmark of the city. It sits enthroned 167 meters above Coburg's old town and is affectionately known as the Franconian Crown. The 10 km main run leads around the castle complex, through forest paths and parkland — with elevation changes that make the run a physically demanding course.
The program includes several competitions: The Bambini run over approximately 400 meters is for the little ones, followed by children's and youth runs over medium distances. The 10 km main run is the sporting centerpiece with ambitious runners from the entire region — the HUK Championships are held within its framework.
Coburg, with around 41,000 inhabitants, is an independent city in the north of the German state of Bavaria — geographically and historically closely linked to Thuringia. The former Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha produced numerous noble houses whose members became queens and kings across half of Europe (Great Britain, Belgium, Bulgaria, etc.). The Veste, Coburg's old town with Ehrenburg Palace, and the Schlossplatz form an ensemble worthy of World Heritage status.
The 44th edition of the VR-Bank-Lauf starts on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at 9:00 AM around the Veste Coburg. The event is organized by TV 1848 Coburg. Over 800 registrations were already received by early May — the quota for the limited finisher shirts is thus largely exhausted.
The program includes four competitions: Bambini run (~400 meters), children's and youth run, 10 km main run, and the HUK Championships, which are held as part of the main run. The course leads around the Veste Coburg castle complex — challenging with elevation changes, but scenically attractive.
Online registration from January 1, 2026, via vestelauf.de. Prices vary depending on the competition. Finisher shirts limited to the first 800 registrations.
By train to Coburg (DB line Bamberg–Sonneberg, ICE stop). By car via A73 (Coburg exit) and federal road B4. Parking at the start/finish area or at the parking lots around the Veste.
Registration opens online on January 1, 2026. Finisher shirts are limited to the first 800 registrations. Over 800 runners had already registered by early May.
Before or after the run, a visit to the Veste Coburg (art collections) and Coburg's old town with its market square and Ehrenburg Palace is recommended.
