Over 50 Years of Tradition — An Entire District Celebrates Itself on Kaiserstraße
The Vohwinkeltag is one of Wuppertal's oldest and most traditional district festivals — for over five decades, the Vohwinkel district has celebrated itself every September. The event is supported by AKTION V Werbegemeinschaft Vohwinkel — an association of around 75 local businesses, restaurateurs, and service providers who have promoted the district's visibility for over 40 years. The format is unusual and unique in this form within the city: not a classic folk festival (Volksfest), but a mix of a trade show, club presentation, community festival, and live stage. In 2026, Vohwinkeltag will take place on Saturday, September 26, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
On the closed-off Kaiserstraße — the district's pedestrian zone — over 40 exhibitors set up their stalls. The mix is programmatically broad:
The result is a "showcase" of Vohwinkel — a mini-exhibition of local players, which, according to AKTION V, is "unique in this form within the city.".
Accompanying the exhibitors' program, there are live acts on a stage in Kaiserstraße: live music, hairdressing demonstrations (Vohwinkel's hairdressers showcase their skills to the public), sports demonstrations by local clubs, performances by school choirs and bands. The exact program will be published shortly before the date at aktion-v.de.
A Vohwinkel tradition: after the official end of Vohwinkeltag at 6:00 PM, the festivities move to the nearby Lienhardplatz, where the AGVV district festival begins — with live music, beer stands, and a community celebration that lasts into the late evening. Those who want to spend the day in the district can seamlessly switch from the day program to the evening program.
Vohwinkel is the western terminus of the Wuppertal Schwebebahn (monorail) — making it ideally connected by public transport. Visitors to the festival can take the Schwebebahn from Oberbarmen, Barmen, or Elberfeld directly to the Vohwinkel terminus, and it's a short walk to the festival grounds. The Schwebebahn ride itself is a Wuppertal tourist magnet — a 13-kilometer-long suspended railway from 1901, which is a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status.
Vohwinkel is located on the western edge of Wuppertal, at the transition to the Niederbergisches Land region. The district has around 30,000 inhabitants and has maintained its own identity against the dominant Wuppertal city center. Kaiserstraße is the main axis and shopping street; Vohwinkeltag turns it into a stage for a vibrant district for one day a year.
The 2026 edition continues the over 50-year tradition of Vohwinkeltag — the unique mix of trade show, club presentation, community festival, and stage program that makes the district the center of Wuppertal for one Saturday in September. The organizer is AKTION V Werbegemeinschaft with its approximately 75 local businesses.
