Three-day village and patron saint festival in honour of Saint Vitus — Barskamp Market Square
The Vitusfest builds on Barskamp's ecclesiastical tradition. Vitus of Lucania — a holy martyr from early Christian times — is the patron saint of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Barskamp. His feast day on 15 June is the occasion for the annual village festival, which in its current form as a three-day summer festival combines ecclesiastical and civil village traditions. Over the decades, the original patron saint celebration has evolved into a broad village festival that appeals to the entire population and welcomes guests from the surrounding villages of the Elbtalaue region.
What makes the Vitusfest special is its sponsorship community. Instead of being organised by a single association, the festival pools the resources of the volunteer fire brigade, village association, church choir, sports club, school, kindergarten, and parish. Each organisation takes responsibility for its own programme items and stalls — the fire brigade often handles catering at the beer tent, the sports club organises games and competitions, the kindergarten designs the children's programme, and the church choir sings during the celebratory church service. This division ensures that all generations of the village are involved in the festival.
Friday evening kicks off the festival with a beer evening and live music. Saturday features a day programme with competitions, hands-on activities, live music, and a dance evening with a band or DJ. Sunday opens with the celebratory church service in honour of Saint Vitus, followed by a morning pint (Frühschoppen), the children's festival in the afternoon, and a more relaxed conclusion. In the previous year, the dance group Next Generation celebrated its premiere at the Vitusfest — a typical example of the mix of established traditions and new programme items that characterises the festival.
Barskamp is a district of the town of Bleckede, located in the Lower Saxony Elbtalaue Biosphere Reserve. With its historic church, market square, and preserved rural architecture, the village is one of the charming settlements in the Elbmarsch region. The Vitusfest is an important unifying element between the population, club life, and the parish.
The Vitusfest 2026 continues the proven three-day concept. Friday evening marks the start with a beer evening, live music, and a cosy atmosphere. Saturday features a packed day programme with competitions organised by the sports club, hands-on activities for children and adults, live music outdoors, and the dance evening with a band or DJ as a social highlight. Sunday opens with the ecumenical celebratory church service in honour of Saint Vitus, followed by the morning pint (Frühschoppen) with brass music, the children's festival in the afternoon, and a relaxed conclusion to the festival in the evening.
The detailed 2026 programme will be published by the sponsorship community in the spring. The structure follows the proven key points from previous years:
