Three days of Viking camp, battles, and fire magic over the Easter weekend above Blankenburg
More than a thousand years after the last true Norsemen set foot on German soil, the Viking Age returns annually to a very special place: Regenstein Castle, first documented in 1169, located three kilometers north of Blankenburg. Carved out of the sandstone massif, with 32 rock chambers and a panoramic view of up to fifty kilometers in clear weather, the fortress is one of the most spectacular destinations in the Harz district even without any festival. For the Easter weekend, it becomes the stage for the Viking Festival β and this is the twentieth time.
In the knight's camp, the Solheimsippe pitch their tents, warriors engage in dramatic mock battles with sword and shield, and over 30 craftspeople and traders set up their stalls across the ramparts. You can watch the horn carver at work, see a tablet weaver creating intricate braids, or have the shield maker explain why a Viking swing is more than just a blow. A free shuttle bus takes you from the parking lot at the edge of the forest up to the castle.
As the sun sets behind the sandstone cliffs, the Easter bonfire blazes on Saturday and Sunday evenings. The band Weltenkrieger plays medieval tunes on historical instruments, fire artist Rudolfo enchants with a fakir show, and storyteller Theo Theodor transports you to the world of Norse sagas. Cookhouses and taverns serve mead and beer, along with stick bread, garlic bread, and hearty sausages β Viking fare as you imagine it.
The festival is one of the most traditional medieval events in Saxony-Anhalt and is particularly popular with families: at hands-on workshops, children learn candle making, can try crossbow shooting, axe throwing, or listen to stories from Freyas Sippe. For Easter, the Easter Bunny also carves a path through the castle ruins, hiding gifts for the little ones. The event is organized by COEX Veranstaltungs GmbH from Cottbus, which has curated the event with great attention to historical detail for years.
The 20th Viking Festival at Regenstein Castle will take place from April 4 to 6, 2026, around the Easter weekend. For three days, visitors can experience the camp life of the Solheimsippe, watch over thirty craftspeople at work, and witness Viking warriors defending their honor in mock battles. The fortress opens daily from 10 AM, and the Easter bonfire will be lit at 7 PM on Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday. For the anniversary, organizer COEX announces special program highlights and a larger market.
Note: The full stage program will be announced by the organizer COEX shortly before the event via official channels.
