Vegesack Celebrates the Autumn Season

When the Vegesack pedestrian zone becomes a festival mile, it's Vegefest. The traditional port town in Bremen's north invites you to a city festival where retailers and restaurateurs celebrate together with their guests. A varied music and show program, including dance performances, provides entertainment on a main stage and smaller street stages, complemented by numerous stalls, a children's program, and hands-on activities. Vegefest is one of the fixed autumn dates in the state of Bremen and is firmly anchored in the district as a family-friendly street festival.

Shopping and Celebrating in One Day

The special feature of Vegefest is its combination with the Sunday shopping event: Around 150 shops in Vegesack city center and the Haven Höövt shopping center open their doors, along with the stores along the street Zum Alten Speicher. They are usually open from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. — while the shop windows entice and restaurateurs offer their specialties, the colorful festival buzz goes on all around. Strolling, feasting, lingering, and celebrating merge seamlessly here — a city festival that appeals to the whole family and fills Vegesack-Mitte with life.

Hanseatic Harbor Flair in Bremen's North

Vegesack looks back on an extraordinary maritime history: The Vegesack harbor was put into operation in 1622/23 and is considered the first harbor in Germany planned on a greenfield site — established because the silting of the Weser made shipping to Bremen difficult. In the second half of the 17th century, Vegesack also developed into a base for Arctic whaling, which is still remembered today by a bronze whale in the pedestrian zone and whale bones at Utkiek. Shipbuilding also shaped the town for centuries. Vegefest connects to this Hanseatic tradition of markets and encounters: Neighbors, families, and visitors from all over Bremen's north meet here for a convivial day in a historic harbor setting.

Atmosphere and Audience

The atmosphere is relaxed and down-to-earth, typical of Northern Germany: Families with children, regular customers of Vegesack's shops, and day-trippers from the surrounding area mingle among the stages, food stalls, and activity areas. Those who want to experience Bremen's north authentically will find Vegefest a convivial season finale in one of the most historic port towns in the state of Bremen.
