Nationwide Day of Action at UNESCO World Heritage Sites — 2026 with Parcours, Igel Column, and Church of Our Lady
Trier was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site on November 28, 1986. At that time, the Roman monuments (Porta Nigra, Amphitheatre, Imperial Baths, Barbara Baths, Basilica of Constantine, Roman Bridge, Igel Column) as well as Trier Cathedral and the adjacent Church of Our Lady were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. This makes Trier the German city with the highest density of Roman and early Christian World Heritage sites.
The nationwide UNESCO World Heritage Day has been jointly celebrated annually by German World Heritage Sites since 2005 on the first Sunday in June. In 2026, a special constellation arises: World Heritage Day coincides with Trier's World Heritage Anniversary Summer, which opens the day before with BrückenGlück on the Roman Bridge. The motto "Together for Peace and Understanding" picks up on UNESCO's peace mission in the context of current geopolitical tensions.
A UNESCO parcours is planned, connecting the individual World Heritage Sites of Trier and providing stations with information, hands-on activities, and small performances. A special festival at the Igel Column (south of Trier, Roman tomb) complements the inner-city program. The grand festival conclusion will be an event in the Church of Our Lady.
The 2026 edition in Trier is particularly significant: it coincides with the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage designation and immediately follows the kickoff of the World Heritage Anniversary Summer with BrückenGlück on June 6/7, 2026. The UNESCO parcours connects Trier's most important World Heritage Sites in a didactically prepared route with stations, explanations, and hands-on activities.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the City of Trier and ttm GmbH in the spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:

Getting there: Inner-city World Heritage Sites on foot. To the Igel Column by car or city bus (line 3).
