Nationwide UNESCO World Heritage Day at the Cistercian Monastery Walkenried as part of the Rammelsberg, Goslar and Upper Harz Water Management World Heritage Association
UNESCO World Heritage Day is traditionally celebrated in Germany on the first Sunday in June and serves to communicate the UNESCO World Heritage sites nationwide. Kloster Walkenried has been part of the joint World Heritage site Bergwerk Rammelsberg, Altstadt von Goslar und Oberharzer Wasserwirtschaft since 2010, which is one of the most multifaceted World Heritage ensembles in Germany.
The World Heritage ensemble connects three very different locations: the medieval Rammelsberg mine in Goslar with its over 1000-year history of ore extraction, the historic Old Town of Goslar with its medieval buildings, the system of Upper Harz Water Management with hundreds of ponds, ditches, and tunnels for mining water supply, and since 2010 the Cistercian Monastery Walkenried as a culturally significant 12th-century monastery complex.
On World Heritage Day, the Cistercian Museum opens with an expanded educational program: special guided tours of the monastery grounds, family activities with hands-on stations, cultural contributions with musical accompaniment, lectures on the monastery's history, and special highlights for communicating Cistercian monastic culture. This makes the monastery complex accessible to a broad audience in a low-threshold manner.
The program is designed in coordination with the other World Heritage sites in Goslar, Rammelsberg, and the Upper Harz Water Management. This makes the thematic connection between the four very different locations visible and strengthens awareness of the shared World Heritage status.
The 2026 edition falls on the first Sunday in June, following the nationwide designation of UNESCO World Heritage Day. The Cistercian Museum is preparing the special program in cooperation with the partner sites Goslar, Rammelsberg, and the Upper Harz Water Management.
