One of Germany's largest free open-air festivals on Würzburg's Talavera
The Umsonst & Draußen Würzburg – U&D for short – is one of Germany's largest free-admission open-air festivals and has stood for free community and cultural freedom for decades. It was initiated in 1988 by Ralf Duggen, who had the idea after a less-than-successful youth center festival in Heidingsfeld and brought it to life together with Hartmut Emser from the Würzburg Youth Welfare Office. Today, the festival attracts up to around 100,000 visitors and is one of Bavaria's largest festivals.
For four days, over 50 national and international acts as well as local newcomers perform on several stages at the Talavera / Mainwiesen. The musical spectrum ranges from rock and indie to world music and electro. Admission to the entire grounds and all concerts is completely free – financed by sponsors, the City of Würzburg, and a supporting association.
In addition to the concerts, U&D features a large arts and crafts bazaar, a children's program with workshops, art exhibitions in the U&D-Atelier, poetry slams, information booths from local organizations, and a wide range of food and drinks with regional and international cuisine. The festival sees itself as a socio-cultural event with a core of volunteers.
The Talavera is very centrally located on the Mainwiesen, only about a 10 to 15-minute walk from Würzburg main train station and directly accessible by tram lines 2 and 4. Würzburg, a university and wine city on the Main River with its Residence (UNESCO World Heritage site), is the venue for one of the country's best-known free festivals in June.
From June 18th to 21st, 2026, the Talavera in Würzburg will once again transform into a four-day music and cultural festival. Over 50 national and international acts, as well as local newcomers, will perform on several stages, with the genre spectrum ranging from rock and indie to world music and electro. Free admission.
In addition to the concerts, there will be a large arts and crafts bazaar, a children's program with workshops, art exhibitions in the U&D-Atelier, poetry slams, and a wide range of food and drinks. The complete 2026 lineup will be published on the official festival website and the Würzburg Open Data Portal.
