17 days of Volksfest (traditional funfair) in the Friedrichsau with a Ferris wheel, XXL music fireworks, and drone show
The Ulmer Volksfest is the largest Volksfest in the Ulm-Neu-Ulm region — a counterpart to Munich's Oktoberfest or Stuttgart's Cannstatter Wasen, but held in midsummer and consistently positioned as a family festival. The venue is the Friedrichsau, a traditional fairground in the Böfingen district right on the banks of the Danube, with good access by bus and tram. Over approximately 12,000 m² of festival space, a small city of rides, festival tents, food stalls, inns, and live stages emerges for 17 days.
Organizer VMV GmbH explicitly advertises bringing rides usually only seen at the very largest Volksfests in Munich or Stuttgart: a Ferris wheel with Danube panorama, Highrider, looping roller coasters, free-fall towers, classic chain carousels, haunted houses, children's carousels, shooting galleries, crêpe stands, candied almond vendors — the full range. Alongside these are festival tents with live bands, traditionally sponsored by local breweries (Gold Ochsen, Magirus, Ulmer Münster Spezial).
For several editions now, the Ulmer Volksfest has focused on spectacular show elements: The XXL music fireworks in the second week of the festival regularly draw tens of thousands to the fairgrounds and along the Danube. A newer element is the drone light show — synchronized light choreographies by hundreds of drones in the night sky, a modern contrast to the classic Volksfest ambiance. Both dates are communicated in advance on the festival website.
The program is structured by themed evenings: Ladies Night (discounted ride prices for women), Family Day (discounted carousel tickets), Action Days (special offers from individual showmen). The Family Sunday with superhero meet-and-greets and kids' specials is an important marketing pillar for the Volksfest operators: it aims to introduce young families to the Volksfest. Opening 2026: Friday, July 10, from 4 PM. Closing: Sunday, July 26.
