Family festival in the historic old town on the Alz — an evening with illuminated alleys
Trostberg is a town of about 11,000 inhabitants in the Traunstein district (Upper Bavaria). The historic old town on the banks of the Alz was laid out in the Middle Ages and has retained its historical character to this day: market square with burgher houses, parish church, remains of the town wall, picturesque alleys. This backdrop is the hallmark of the Altstadtfest.
The Altstadtfest is conceived as a single festival evening: Saturday from 6:00 p.m., the entire old town transforms into an illuminated festival mile. Several stages spread throughout the town, catering stands from local restaurateurs and associations, hands-on activities, and musical entertainment — from traditional folk music to cover bands on the main stage.
The Trostberg associations are the pillars of the Altstadtfest: traditional costume, music, sports, and cultural associations set up their stands and participate in the program. The town of Trostberg coordinates the event; many details — stage program, lighting concept, security — are designed together with the associations. Volunteer participation is a prerequisite for the festival's family-friendly atmosphere.
Trostberg is located on the edge of the Chiemgau region, about 20 km from Traunstein and 30 km from Lake Chiemsee. The region is deeply shaped by salt and salt trading traditions — the old salt road from Bad Reichenhall to Munich led through Trostberg. This historical significance explains the well-preserved medieval townscape. The Altstadtfest makes this history tangible.
The Altstadtfest 2026 starts on Saturday, June 27 at 6:00 p.m. and ends in the late evening hours. The entire Trostberg old town will be converted into a festival mile: stages spread throughout the town, catering stands in front of the historic burgher houses, illuminated alleys on the banks of the Alz.
The program is designed by the town of Trostberg together with the local associations — traditional costume, music, sports, and cultural associations. Specific program details will be announced by the city marketing department in the summer of 2026.
By car via the A 8 (exit Traunstein) or the B 304 from Munich (90 km). Parking around the city center. By train to Trostberg (Munich-Salzburg line via Mühldorf).
