Palatinate wine festival in the Trift district of Bad Dürkheim with Palatinate wines, a children's carousel, regional specialties, and conviviality
Trift is one of the western districts of Bad Dürkheim and is a typical Palatinate wine-growing village. With its long-established wineries, manageable village structure, and location on the edge of the Palatinate Forest, Trift embodies the image of a classic Palatinate wine village: wine, forest, conviviality, and strong club structures shape village life. The Weinkerwe is the central annual event and an expression of the district's vibrant wine culture.
As the name suggests, wine is the absolute focus of the Trifter Weinkerwe. The local wineries, including the Schönfelder-Hof winery, one of Trift's best-known establishments, serve their own wines. Dry Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Rosé, and Dornfelder represent the classic Palatinate wine spectrum. Unlike many Palatinate folk festivals (Volksfeste) where beer plays a prominent role, the Trifter Kerwe is deliberately wine-focused.
A special feature of the Trifter Weinkerwe is its child-friendly orientation. Instead of large amusement rides, there is a classic children's carousel – that nostalgic element that characterized many festivals (Kerwen) and markets (Jahrmärkte) in the region and is now rare. In addition, children's games are offered: ring toss, lucky dip, a shooting gallery for the youngest, and skill games. This child-friendly program makes the Trifter Weinkerwe a true family festival where even the little ones have their place.
Food is served by local clubs and the volunteer fire department with classic Palatinate specialties: Saumagen (stuffed pig's stomach), Leberknödel (liver dumplings), Bratwürste (sausages), Sauerkraut (sauerkraut), Spundekäs (cheese dip), Handkäs (cheese), fries, Pfälzer Wurstsalat (sausage salad), and sweet specialties. The catering is hearty, traditional, and authentically Palatinate in every respect.
What makes the Trifter Weinkerwe particularly appealing is its manageable size. Unlike the large Dürkheim Wurstmarkt event, the Trifter Kerwe is a classic district festival with a family atmosphere, short distances, and personal contact between locals and visitors. Anyone who wants to experience authentic Palatinate festival culture away from the tourist hotspots will find it here.
