The [ tra'vers ] festival is a new, transcultural festival by the Saarländisches Staatstheater in cooperation with Kulturgut Ost and Sektor Heimat. Over four days – from October 28 to 31, 2026 – it blurs the lines between high and subculture, bringing together classical music with electronic music, visual arts, dance, and performance. A New Festival Voice in Saarland

The [ tra'vers ] festival is one of the most exciting festival premieres of 2026 in Germany. The Saarländisches Staatstheater in Saarbrücken is launching a format that has never existed before: a transcultural festival that consciously dissolves the boundaries between classical high culture and electronic subculture, between concerts, visual arts, performance, and dance – not as a fashionable crossover label, but as a curatorial concept with a clear stance.

Three Partners, One Ambition

The festival is being created in cooperation with two Saarbrücken cultural players: Kulturgut Ost, a collective with roots in Saarbrücken's independent scene, and Sektor Heimat, an organization at the intersection of club culture and performance. Together with the Saarländisches Staatstheater, they are putting together a program that opens up the seemingly closed worlds of institutions and the independent scene. "We want to break down the artificial separation between dominant culture and alternative culture," reads the festival's self-description – an ambition that clearly defines the artistic and political character of the festival.

The Venues

Two central Saarbrücken venues will be used: the Saarländisches Staatstheater on Schillerplatz with its three stages (Großes Haus, Alte Feuerwache, sparte4) and the Alte Feuerwache, whose industrial architecture provides the ideal setting for the electronic and performance-focused program items. The combination of two such different venues is part of the festival's conceptual aim.

International and Regional Artists

The festival invites international, national, and regional artists who mostly present their work in an interdisciplinary manner. The lineup for the inaugural edition includes violinist Estella Boersma with her audiovisual work "Remnants of Fate", Berlin-based techno producer Recondite, the electronic duo Extrawelt with orchestral accompaniment, composer and pianist Kaan Bulak, composer Peter Hinderthür, pianist Milian Mori, choreographer Lucyna Zwolinska, Hungarian composer Márton Nemes, trumpeter Jorge Duarte, as well as the exhibition and performance projects Experimance, Kaessi, Fruit from Noise, and the indie-pop act Good Looking Wilson.

Festival Concept

The program thus combines classical and experimental music (string quartet, solo concert, orchestra) with electronic music (live set, club format, audiovisual performances), visual arts (installations, light art), dance, and performance. Highlight productions include "Krabat" – a musical adaptation of Otfried Preußler's novel –, the light installation "EIDOS", and the opening work "Remnants of Fate". The festival thus clearly positions itself among international crossover festivals (Sonar, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Mira Festival, Holland Festival) and creates a new address for this form of art in Saarland.

Saarbrücken as a Festival City

The [ tra'vers ] festival is part of a strategy by the Saarländisches Staatstheater and the state capital Saarbrücken to strengthen their profile as a Franco-German cultural hub. In addition to the established Festival Perspectives (May/June, exclusively Franco-German stage art), [ tra'vers ] expands the Saarland festival year with a contemporary, urban component and underscores the diversity of the Saarland's cultural scene.

[ tra'vers ] festival — edition 2026

The inaugural edition of the [ tra'vers ] festival will take place from Wednesday, October 28 to Saturday, October 31, 2026, at the Saarländisches Staatstheater and the Alte Feuerwache in Saarbrücken. Four days of transcultural programming – classical, electronic, performance, visual arts. Opening with Estella Boersma's "Remnants of Fate".

The festival's premiere is part of the "Faszination, Festivals, Feeling" campaign, with which Saarland is profiling its festival landscape in 2026. The festival positions itself as a curated contribution to a transdisciplinary art scene that has lacked its own format in Saarbrücken until now. Tickets are available in advance from the box office.
