Traditional costume festival on Bückeburg's market square with Schaumburger Trachten Band, folk dances, and Sunday shopping
The Schaumburg region boasts an exceptionally rich tradition of folk costumes. The typical Schaumburg costume – with the tall, often black Bückeburg headdress, the richly embroidered bodice, and characteristic colors – is among the most striking women's costumes in Northern Germany. The men's costumes are also distinguished by their unique cuts and materials. The Trachtenfest on Bückeburg's market square makes this tradition visible to a broad audience.
The Trachtenfest begins on Sunday afternoon from 3 PM. Costume groups from the villages of the Schaumburg region present themselves on the market square, perform folk dances, and showcase their regional costume variations. The Schaumburger Trachten Band plays traditional dance music, accompanying the costume groups and inviting the public to join in. A photo booth offers visitors the opportunity to have their picture taken in traditional attire.
A catering stand on the market square provides food and drinks. There are attractions for children, making the festival family-friendly. Those attending the Trachtenfest can conveniently combine it with a stroll through Bückeburg's city center, as the shops are open in parallel for the Sunday shopping event.
In the Schaumburg region, traditional costumes are not a museum exhibit but a living tradition. In numerous costume groups, women, men, and children practice dances, maintain the costumes of their grandmothers, and wear them on festive occasions. The annual Trachtenfest on Bückeburg's market square serves as a stage for this tradition, providing a public platform for the preservation of customs.
The 2026 edition continues the annual tradition of the Bückeburg Trachtenfest. The traditional costume groups of the Schaumburg region have their fixed date in May to present themselves to the public.
The Schaumburger Trachten Band provides the traditional dance music, to which the costume groups perform folk dances.
The exact program for 2026, including performance times for individual costume groups, will be published in spring 2026. The structure will follow the proven framework of previous years.
