Midsummer Night (St. John's Night) at the Tiergarten Worms with evening event in the zoo grounds
Midsummer Night is one of the oldest European festival dates and marks the shortest night of the year. In the Christian calendar, it is anchored as St. John's Night (St. John's Day, June 24th). The Tiergarten Worms takes up this date and designs an evening in which the zoo grounds no longer serve as a daytime visiting place but become a quiet, atmospherically lit nature backdrop.
Many of the animal species kept in the Worms Tiergarten — such as owls, raccoons, common buzzards, hedgehogs, hares and water fowl — are more active at dusk than at midday. The Midsummer Night offers the rare opportunity to observe these animals in their evening activity phase. Animal keepers are on site and answer questions; supplementary explanation boards are distributed in the grounds.
The paths of the Tiergarten are staged for the Midsummer Night with torches, lanterns and selective spotlights. At central places, small campfires (in fire bowls) burn, where visitors can linger and chat. The atmosphere is quiet, family-friendly and contemplative — a deliberate counterpoint to larger, louder Worms summer events.
A small Tiergarten cash desk with gastronomy offer is open during the Midsummer Night: bratwurst, drinks, non-alcoholic cocktails and cake from the circle of friends stand. Admission is announced by the Tiergarten Worms on the event day and is within the usual range of an extended evening visit.
The Midsummer Night opens the summer event series of the Tiergarten. On June 28th follows the great family summer festival with cycling course, milking cow and barefoot trail; on September 3rd, the Day of the Fire Salamander with zoo-pedagogical focus. The Midsummer Night is the atmospherically most evocative event of this series and is especially designed for couples, families with older children and nature lovers.
