About Dreschefest Schillerslage

The Dreschefest Schillerslage transports its visitors back to the era of pre-industrial agriculture. On the third Sunday in September, a field near the Schillerslage fire station (part of the town of Burgdorf) transforms into an open-air historical stage. Horses pull old harvesting equipment, a horse-powered threshing demonstration showcases threshing with historical machinery, huts and stalls present crafts, regional specialties, and old tools. The festival is one of the few of its kind in Lower Saxony and thus a living piece of agricultural history. On September 20, 2026, the village will open its fields to share this tradition with all generations.

Experience Old Times

The Dreschefest Schillerslage is an extraordinary event among the local festivals of Burgdorf. Instead of a classic folk festival with a beer tent and dancing, the focus here is on historical agriculture. Horses, old machinery, traditional craft demonstrations, and a relaxed field atmosphere characterize the day.

Program Highlights

Horse-Powered Threshing

The highlight of the festival is the demonstration of threshing with historical equipment, pulled by horses. Those who have never seen it before will experience firsthand how laborious the grain harvest was before mechanization.

Historical Agriculture

Other old harvesting implements – plows, harrows, hay turners, scythes – will be demonstrated. Information boards and explanations by local farmers help with understanding. For children and young adults, the festival is a living history book.

Huts and Stalls

Huts and stalls in the field offer regional specialties – bread from a wood-fired oven, cakes, sausages, beer, apple juice – as well as craft demonstrations and old tools to touch.

Schillerslage and Burgdorf

Schillerslage is a small village within the town of Burgdorf. With the Dreschefest, it presents a unique, carefully preserved custom that no longer exists in many regions of Northern Germany. The village is located about 7 km east of Burgdorf and is accessible via the L 410.

Dreschefest Schillerslage — edition 2026
