Traditional threshing festival on the third Sunday of September in Schillerslage – experience horse-powered threshing, historical agriculture, and old customs
The Dreschefest Schillerslage is an extraordinary event among the local festivals of Burgdorf. Instead of a classic folk festival with a beer tent and dancing, the focus here is on historical agriculture. Horses, old machinery, traditional craft demonstrations, and a relaxed field atmosphere characterize the day.
The highlight of the festival is the demonstration of threshing with historical equipment, pulled by horses. Those who have never seen it before will experience firsthand how laborious the grain harvest was before mechanization.
Other old harvesting implements – plows, harrows, hay turners, scythes – will be demonstrated. Information boards and explanations by local farmers help with understanding. For children and young adults, the festival is a living history book.
Huts and stalls in the field offer regional specialties – bread from a wood-fired oven, cakes, sausages, beer, apple juice – as well as craft demonstrations and old tools to touch.
Schillerslage is a small village within the town of Burgdorf. With the Dreschefest, it presents a unique, carefully preserved custom that no longer exists in many regions of Northern Germany. The village is located about 7 km east of Burgdorf and is accessible via the L 410.
In 2026, the village of Schillerslage will again celebrate its Dreschefest. The program follows the proven structure, with horse-powered threshing and demonstrations of old harvesting technology as the central focus. Detailed times will be published by the organizer in late summer.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in late summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
