About Theater auf der Burg

Since 1997, the Laienbühne Schorndorf e.V. has performed open-air theatre every July on the historic Burg Neuhaus in the district of Cham. Bavarian folk plays and comedies are performed – mostly works by Georg Maier and his Iberlbühne. The medieval castle backdrop, the catering before the performance and during the breaks, and the hearty dialect make this Bavarian Forest summer theatre particularly appealing.

In 2026, the Laienbühne Schorndorf will perform »Die weiße Gams«, a Bavarian folk play by Georg Maier (»A ganz vareckte Wuiderergschicht«). In a remote alpine valley, a poacher causes trouble; a hunter and his assistant are after a rare white chamois. Five performances in July at Burg Neuhaus, each starting at 8 PM.

In a remote Bavarian mountain valley, a poacher causes trouble, stealing the finest bucks right under the noses of the authorities. A white chamois – an unusual mutation – is sighted repeatedly in the hunting grounds. The head forester desires its beard as an ornament for his hat and promises Grindfeichtl and Soacher promotion and more pay if they bring the animal down.

Directed by Kurt Laumer and Rita Reiser. The cast includes Kurt Laumer as innkeeper Nusserer and Manfred Schnitzbauer as head forester Grindfeichtl. A hearty Bavarian comedy by Georg Maier.

Getting There

Burg Neuhaus is located near Schorndorf in the municipality of Traitsching, district of Cham. Travel via the A3 (Roding/Cham exit) or the federal roads towards Cham. Parking is available at the foot of the castle.

Open-air Theatre in a Historic Setting

Burg Neuhaus towers high above the Bavarian Forest – and since 1997, it has been transformed into a natural stage every July. The Laienbühne Schorndorf e.V. turns the old walls into an atmospheric open-air stage, where Bavarian folk plays and comedies can be experienced, primarily from the pen of Georg Maier and his Iberlbühne.

Bavarian Dialect and Hearty Comedy

The trademarks of the performances are the authentic Bavarian dialect, a playful amateur troupe, and stories drawn directly from rural Bavaria – poachers, hunters, innkeepers, and local characters. The historic castle atmosphere provides an unmistakable setting for the comedies.

The castle inn provides refreshments before the performance and during the breaks. This makes a theatre evening at Burg Neuhaus a convivial summer experience for the entire region.
