Open-air theatre by Theater Chemnitz at the Küchwald stage
The Küchwaldbühne is one of Chemnitz's best-kept secrets: an amphitheatre in the Küchwald, one of Germany's largest urban forests. The stage was built in the 1950s as a socialist folk festival area, but has since become the open-air venue for Theater Chemnitz. Every summer, a unique production is created here, usually designed as family theatre and adapted for the unusual performance space.
The play "The Jungle Book" — based on Rudyard Kipling's story — is part of the popular family theatre repertoire. Theater Chemnitz uses the natural backdrop to stage the story of Mowgli, Bagheera, Baloo, and Shere Khan in a real forest setting. Performances begin at 5 PM each day — the play ends in time for families to head home before dark.
The combination of city theatre quality and a natural stage gives the production a special character. Where a classic stage operates with sets, the Küchwaldbühne uses the forest itself — the audience sits on the stone steps of the amphitheatre, looking at the stage, with the trees of the Küchwald in the background. In case of bad weather, performances may be moved to an alternative venue or postponed, depending on the situation.
The Küchwald is part of the Erzgebirgsvorland nature park, covering over 80 hectares, making it one of Germany's largest urban forests. It's reachable in 15 minutes by tram from Chemnitz main station, located in the Yorckgebiet / Küchwald district. The blend of theatre, city forest, and family audience makes the Küchwaldbühne one of Saxony's most beautiful summer theatre locations.
The production runs on multiple performance dates spread over four weeks. The stage adaptation follows the classic narrative structure — Mowgli, the human child among animals, the conflict with Shere Khan, the journey back to humans. The theatre uses the natural setting of the Küchwald as an integral part of the staging.
