Spiritual, emotional, physical — the contemplative Christmas market of the pilgrimage town of Telgte on the third Advent weekend, December 11th to 13th, 2026
The small town of Telgte on the Ems river in eastern Münsterland has been one of the most important Marian pilgrimage sites in Westphalia since the Middle Ages. This spiritual tradition has given rise to a very special Advent market: the Telgter Dreiklang-Markt. While other Christmas markets focus on size and mulled wine quantities, Telgte concentrates on contemplation, craftsmanship, and culinary quality — a conscious alternative for those seeking peace and quiet during Advent.
The market's concept combines three dimensions that are meant to go together during Advent:
Unlike large markets with hundreds of stalls, Telgte focuses on around 30 selected exhibitors: handicrafts (ceramics, wood carvings, glass, jewelry, textile art), regional products (honey, cheese, sausage), Christmas decorations, toys, and books. The exhibitors are curated anew each year — mass-produced goods are not welcome here.
The Propsteikirche St. Clemens from the 17th century and the Gnadenkapelle with its famous statue of Mary (Pietà from 1370) are both located directly at the festival grounds — and are intensively involved during the market. Advent services, concerts (choirs from Münster, organ recitals), lectures, and open church tours form a parallel spiritual program to the secular market festivities.
Instead of tons of bratwurst and mulled wine, the Telgte market offers regional specialties of the highest quality: Münsterland ham sandwiches, Pumpernickel from traditional bakeries, homemade cookies, organic mulled wine from Rhenish winemakers, hot chocolate with cream, regional cheeses, stollen from the Warendorf district.
Telgte is a charming pilgrimage town in the Warendorf district — just 15 kilometers east of Münster. The picturesque old town with its half-timbered houses, the Ems promenade, and traditional artisan courtyards invite you to spend a whole Advent weekend. Worth seeing are the Religio-Museum (Christian popular piety) and the RELíGIO Collection of Religious Studies. As a place of pilgrimage and a town of enjoyment, Telgte is one of Münsterland's best-kept secrets.
