Marathon in the Hanseatic City on the Elbe Dike
The Tangermünde Elbe Dike Marathon is one of the most important running events in the state of Saxony-Anhalt — and one of the most beautiful natural marathons in Central Germany. Since 2011, the association of the same name has organized this running festival, which in its peak years attracts around 2,000 active participants to Tangermünde. According to the Marathon4you.de rankings, the marathon ranks 3rd among East German marathons and 15th nationwide.
The venue is the Hanseatic city of Tangermünde in the Stendal district — one of the most beautiful old towns in Saxony-Anhalt, with a Gothic town hall, castle complex, and a charming harbor right on the Elbe. The start and finish are on the harbor promenade. The course is a loop through the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Mittelelbe — over the dikes of the Elbe meadows, through meadows and forests, on asphalt and natural ground.
Five distances, one running experience
The Elbdeichmarathon deliberately offers a wide range of distances: from the marathon of 42.195 km to the children's run. In between are the Avacon half marathon, the Elektro-Schubert 10 km run, and the Humanas mini marathon of 4.2 km — which is also suitable for walkers. The mix of a fun run and an ambitious marathon format makes the event a family occasion.
One of the most beautiful marathon courses in Germany
Those who run on the Elbe dikes have the landscape, the Hanseatic city of Tangermünde in view, and the water of the Elbe as a constant companion. The mix of natural passages — through the floodplain forests of the biosphere reserve — and the historic Tangermünde city center makes the course unmistakable. Wild geese return in autumn, and one of the earliest marathon dates in Germany starts here in spring.
