Tangermünde is one of the most beautiful small towns in Saxony-Anhalt. The Hanseatic city with its brick Gothic buildings, the completely preserved medieval city wall, and its location on the Elbe and Tanger rivers is already a tourist pearl of the Altmark. But in Advent, it becomes something special: The Tangermünde Christmas Market around the magnificent Gothic town hall is one of the most atmospheric in all of Central Germany.

From December 4th to 6th, 2026 — on the second Advent weekend — the market invites you to the historic old town for three days. The Gothic town hall with its brick facade forms the backdrop; a small handicraft market opens in the town hall's festival hall. In front of the town hall, the stalls of regional providers line up, interspersed with mulled wine stands, bratwurst stalls, a carousel for the children, and a meeting point with Santa Claus, to whom the little ones can whisper their wishes.

SCHULZENS Brewery Christmas — the market within the market

What makes the Tangermünde market unique: Parallel to the market at the town hall, the Brewery Christmas at Schulzens Hof takes place. The historic Schulzens brewery — one of the oldest in the Altmark — opens its brewery premises for the Advent market. Here, the in-house beer steams, the Schulzens Brewery Christmas beer is served, and in the brewery vaults, there is handicrafts, specialties, and live music. The audience commutes between the two locations — and this mix of town hall square and brewery premises is precisely what defines the character of this market.

The Altmark and its quiet beauty

The Altmark — the northwestern part of Saxony-Anhalt — is a region still underestimated by tourism. Hanseatic cities like Stendal, Salzwedel, Werben, Havelberg, and Tangermünde have preserved their medieval character. Tangermünde, once the favorite residence of Charles IV, was one of the most important centers of the northern empire in the 14th century. Today, the city oscillates between cultural heritage and tourism, and the Christmas market is one of its most distinctive highlights.
