First theater open-air at Tangermünde harbour — Monty Python's Spamalot
Tangermünde, located in the Stendal district in the Altmark region, is one of the most beautiful brick Gothic towns in Central Germany. The 14th-century town walls, chapter houses, castle, and Gothic town hall make it one of the most impressive historical backdrops in Saxony-Anhalt. In 2026, this backdrop will be used as a stage space for the first time on a continuous basis: The Theater der Altmark Stendal, the regional city theatre, in cooperation with the town of Tangermünde, is erecting a purpose-built open-air stage at the harbour and will be performing theatre there for three weeks.
The opening production is a deliberately popular choice: "Monty Python's Spamalot", the stage play based on the cult film "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", which won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2005. Witty, parodic, with over-the-top songs and a British anti-hero mentality that takes on a special poignancy in the shadow of the medieval town walls. The direction and set design are by the ensemble of the Theater der Altmark, and the repertoire has been adapted for the open-air format.
The premiere is scheduled for June 20, 2026, and the performance run lasts until July 12. A total of around 15-20 performances are planned, according to official information — starting in the evening after dusk. In case of bad weather, there is an alternative indoor venue at the Theater der Altmark in Stendal. The organizers are counting on the format — the combination of a historic town, summer evening, and exuberant theatre — developing its own unique appeal.
The Altmark region in the north of Saxony-Anhalt is one of Germany's less-developed tourist areas — with vast flat landscapes, old brick Hanseatic towns (Stendal, Salzwedel, Tangermünde, Werben), and a quiet, unpretentious atmosphere. Tangermünde is the most important tourist destination in the region alongside Stendal. "Summer & Theater" is part of a series of initiatives with which Tangermünde is repositioning itself culturally.
For its 2026 summer production, the Theater der Altmark Stendal has chosen Tangermünde harbour as its venue for the first time. The choice of Monty Python's Spamalot — one of the most popular comedy musicals of the past 20 years — aims to attract a broad audience from the region while meeting high acting standards. The ensemble of the Theater der Altmark takes on all roles, and the musical direction and stage design are adapted to the open-air setting. The stage will be positioned so that the Tangermünde town walls serve as a natural backdrop.
Alternative performances will take place in the auditorium of the Theater der Altmark in Stendal — tickets remain valid.
