Day of Culture — the Wülfrath Cultural Trail
The Day of Culture, also known internally as the Wülfrath Cultural Trail, is the annual showcase of Wülfrath's cultural scene. On a Saturday in September, the city's associations, female artists, galleries, workshops, and educational institutions open their doors for a day. The city center transforms into a trail: at each stop, there's something to see, hear, or participate in — concerts, readings, exhibitions, dance demonstrations, painting workshops, theater rehearsals, studio visits. 2026: Saturday, September 5. Organized by Stadtkulturbund Wülfrath e.V., the umbrella organization of Wülfrath's cultural associations, in cooperation with the City of Wülfrath.
Wülfrath — a small Bergisch town between Wuppertal and Düsseldorf
Wülfrath belongs to the Mettmann district and is located in the southern Bergisches Land, between Wuppertal, Velbert, and Mettmann. With around 21,000 inhabitants, the town is a classic medium-sized town — without mass tourism, but with a distinct culture of associations and citizens. Wülfrath is known for its historic Heidberg, the half-timbered old town, and the Kalkmuseum (Lime Museum), which documents the city's centuries-old limestone tradition. This small, dense identity provides the ideal setting for a cultural trail: distances are short, each stop is reachable on foot.
Format — Stations Instead of a Main Stage
The appeal of the cultural trail lies in the fact that there is no central stage. Instead, the activities are spread throughout the entire city area: in the Heumarkt Gallery, the Niederbergisches Museum, the Kulturhaus, in parish halls, schools, cafés, and private workshops. Those who complete the trail automatically get to know Wülfrath's topography. Each station has its specialty: one association offers a concert, the next a pottery workshop, then a gallery opening, and in the evening, dancing in the market square.
Participating Associations and Institutions
The Stadtkulturbund unites Wülfrath's most important cultural players:
- Music associations — men's choir, church choir, brass band, orchestra
- Local history and heritage associations — Niederbergisches Museum, local history society
- Artists — galleries, independent studios
- Theater and dance groups
- Literary societies — readings, book clubs
- Cultural school and adult education center (Volkshochschule)
Family Program
Several stations are explicitly aimed at families: hands-on workshops (pottery, painting, printing), children's concerts, theater workshops for younger audiences. With children, the trail can be explored comfortably in an afternoon — shorter distances than in a big city, each station manageable.
Admission and Program Information
The Day of Culture is completely free. The complete program for 2026 with all stations and times will be published in the summer on the Stadtkulturbund website and in the Wülfrath cultural calendar. Those who want to plan can download the trail flyer the day before — or let themselves drift on the day and discover at will.
